What to check before you call
Each guide explains the likely cause, four checks that need no tools, and when a component has genuinely failed.
Refrigerator not cooling
Clear the interior vents of food so air can move between compartments.
Ice maker not making ice
Confirm the water supply valve behind the unit is fully open and the line is not kinked.
Dishwasher not draining
Remove and rinse the filter in the bottom of the tub.
Dryer not heating or taking two cycles
Clean the lint screen and the housing below it.
Oven not heating or holding temperature
On gas, watch the igniter through the oven floor vent. A glow that never lights the burner means a weak igniter.
Wine cooler not holding temperature
Vacuum the front grille and the condenser behind it.
Washer not draining or spinning
Clear the drain pump filter at the bottom front of a front loader.
Range burner clicking but not lighting
Dry the burner cap and igniter fully after a boil over.
Refrigerator leaking water
Check the defrost drain at the back of the freezer floor for ice or debris.
Dishwasher showing an error code
Note the exact code before turning the unit off.
